What is a Protomorphogen™ extract?

Protomorphogen™ extracts are specific material extracted from animal glands and organs through a complex, multistep process to retain what Standard Process founder Dr. Royal Lee termed “cellular determinants.” Current laboratory methods have confirmed that these proprietary extracts contain minerals, nucleotides (the components of nucleic acids like RNA and DNA), and peptides (short chains of amino acids).*

Why is this extract used in supplements?

Dr. Lee created nutrition products that incorporated ideal sources of nutrition from both vegetables and animals. Veal bone is a complex raw material. In animals, as in humans, bones support white and red blood cell generation and act as a depot for minerals needed by the body. Veal bone PMG™ extract is designed to distill the complexity of this tissue to support human bone health.*

How does the manganese in this product support health?

Manganese is necessary for bone growth, development, and replacement.1, 2Manganese is one of several trace elements necessary for bone health.3Manganese helps to form cartilage and is required to synthesize bone.4Manganese is also necessary (in small quantities) for protein and fat metabolism.5 Manganese supports healthy nerves and strengthens immunity while also playing a role in blood sugar regulation and energy production.6Manganese affects enzymes involved in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans, which are important structural components in connective and other tissue that promote the health and maintenance of ligaments and tendons.7, 8, 9*

Manganese is one of the few nutrients found at high levels in Standard Process products. It supports tissues rich in mitochondria, like bone and muscle.10 These tissues contain higher amounts of manganese relative to other body structures. Keep in mind that manganese absorption is reduced with age; for example, in a study of the general U.S. population, blood manganese levels were lower with older age.11*
